Introduction: Education aims at improving a man’s, both the body and the mind. Every man needs the education to remove his animality. No man can prosper in life without education. So, education is needed largely. Primary education is the basis of all kinds of education. Primary education has been made compulsory in our country.
Meaning of compulsory free primary education: Compulsory primary education means that children between the ages of six to ten must complete education in primary school. It aims at giving simple knowledge to the children of poor parents. The government of Bangladesh accepts all liabilities of primary education. That’s to say, primary education has been made full free.
Importance· of primary education: In our practical life, the importance of primary education can hardly be overemphasized. Those who are deprived of primary education lag behind in life. The importance of primary education is given here:
(a) Primary education removes illiteracy from the country.
(b) Primary education assists to prosper in life.
(c) It presents a good nation as well as a prosperous country.
(d) Primary education for all is compulsory to materialize democracy.
(e) The arts and culture of our primary education are compulsory to develop and moderate.
Cause of making compulsory free primary education: There are many primary schools in our country. But only a few children attend these. Most of the poor people of our country do not send their children to primary schools Again, about most of those children who enter class one do not complete the primary course. As a result, they easily forgot reading and writing at an early
age. Moreover, in a democratic country like ours, it is impossible to neglect the need for primary education. In such a form of government different political issues are decided by the votes of the common people. That is why primary education today has been made free and compulsory.
Steps were taken by the government: Bangladesh govern1nent has undertaken some measures to wipe out illiteracy. In our country, the year 1992 has started as the year for universal education. For this purpose, a thana has been selected in every district in the first instance. All children between the ages of five to seven are thought here. It is compulsory.
Food for educ~tion program: The government has started food for the education programme. It is to encourage cam the poor parents to send their children to schools. Sixty-four thanas have been selected in this programme. The poor parents are given wheat free of cost for sending their children to school. Besides, the government is supplying books up to class V free of cost. The objectives are to increase enrolment especially of girls, reduce, dropouts and retain then at school till completion of the primary education.
Conclusion: It is good news that the people of our country have understood the need for primary education and every will send their children to primary school. A time will come when there will be no illiterate people Dretn our country.
