Empowerment of Women
Introduction: Women’s empowerment is one of the most discussed topics in recent years. Almost half of the population of the world is women. In Bangladesh, the ratio is also the same. So, without the empowerment of women, all-round development of a nation will remain a dream.
Definition: Empowerment means the process by which any man or woman is given power or authority to participate in earning money and decision making. Empowerment of women in the process of giving women the opportunity of making a decision about their life, living, and surroundings. It enables women to join the workforce and contribute to family income.
Women’s position in the past: In the past women were segregated from out of home productive work. They were kept within the four walls. The hearth became the place for them. So cooking cleaning, washing, giving birth and rearing children became their jobs. In Bangladesh’s position of the Women is very humiliating. Women are the worst sufferers.
Importance of women’s empowerment: Women are nowadays as important as men in society. They constitute nearly half of our total population. So, there can be no denying the fact that they too possess equal rights and duties as men. They have noble missions to fulfil as men. If they get an opportunity, their genius and capacities will bloom fully. No nation can make the real progress keeping a full half of its population in the dark. So women’s empowerment is essential.
Cause of disempowerment: As Bangladeshi women have no economic freedom, they can not enjoy life and power in decision making in their family as well as in society. Our social outlook and religious beliefs are also barriers to the empowerment of our women. Women in or society have always been considered subservient to me. Most of the families are dominated by men. The social prejudices and customs always tend to degrade the position of women.
Necessary steps for empowerment: Some practical measures should be taken for the empowerment of women. Women should be provided with proper education. The equality between men and women in all spheres of national life must be established. The women must be free from the curse of poverty. We must ensure women s nights. They should be protected from torture violence and sexual harassment.
Women’s present position: Today women are playing a significant role in all spheres of life. Women are getting free education up to higher secondary level. They are working hand in hand with men in all spheres of work. They are garments workers, pilots, doctors, engineers, teachers, administrators etc.
Conclusion: No country can run smoothly without women’s empowerment. If the women can enjoy the equal rights in all spheres of life, the country will be able to face the challenges of the 21st century.
