Introduction: Eve-teasing has become a familiar term nowadays in Bangladesh. Eve-teasing is a regular occurrence for the women and girls of Bangladesh. Every day women come across some form of eve-teasing. It is one of the main social diseases at this moment.
What is eve-teasing: Eve, the first woman represents women folk and teasing means irritating. So eve-teasing is the expression of perversive sexual desire. Those who tease women are called stalkers. Now eve-teasing is being termed as sexual harassment. So as a whole different form of sexual harassment is widely known as eve-teasing.
Who are culprits: Hooligans demoralized and addicted boys especially resort to senseless activities like eve-teasing. The social vagabonds and pampered youths of rich families also become eve-teaser.
Causes of eve-teasing: There are many causes of eve-teasing. Moral degradation, lack of moral education unemployment, illiteracy and negative representation of female in media, etc are sore causes of eve-teasing.
How the eve-teasers tease: The-eve-teasers lie in wait here and there and whenever they see the girls they try to draw their attraction by gestures or body language and slang language. They follow them, whistle, sing songs arid even push them or touch them.
Impacts of eve-teasing: Eve-teasing is a threat of Bangladesh. It is destroying the social balance and taking away the leaves of young girls. Eve-teasing increases girls drop out rate from school. Parents are concerned about their daughter’s honor or safety. Sometimes they keep their daughters home or marry them off at an early age. Girls who are teased or harassed are also pushed into marriage before they are physically or mentally prepared. Eve-teasing causes many women to commit suicide.
Stop eve-teasing: The present government has given importance to this issue. Recently the government of Bangladesh has given power to the magistrate to stop eve-teasing. The teaser will be punished on the spot with a maximum of 1 year of imprisonment or will have to pay -fine or both. This law will help to stop eve-teasing and will create fear among the stalkers.
Recommendation:
(a) The education system must be deliberated in a way as to promote a positive relationship between girls and boys.
(b) Parents should adopt a friendly relation with there boys.
(c) Teachers must play their role to repeat moral teachings in young minds.
( d) A determined effort is a must in this regard.
(e) Girls should protest strongly against the eve-teasers.
(f) Family and the neighborhood must support a girl in this regard.
Conclusion: In Islam, women bear special respect. Insulting them is also insulting Islam. So the govt. must take it seriously. Sheikh Hasina as the PM and Begum Zia as the leader of the opposition must not forget that they are women too. The country wants both of them to be active in such issues.
