Food Adulteration in Bangladesh

Introduction: Food adulteration is a social curse. It is now a very familiar word in the country. There is hardly any food which is free from adulteration. People are now concerned about it.

Definition: Food adulteration means mixing of harmful, unnecessary and lower quality ingredients with food. Man, mixing adulteration with food, brings danger and peril in his life. He, in order to get much profit, mixes adulteration with food.

The causes of adulteration: Excessive greed and lack of more quality of the businessmen are the main causes of food adulteration some dishonest businessmen want to make more profit by selling adulterated food. They don’t have any conscience. But they do not even think that their own children may also become a victim of food adulteration. Lack of people’s consciousness and the indifference of the authority are also responsible for this.

The forms of adulteration in foodstuff: Adulteration is exposed in foodstuff in many forms. These are noted below:

(a) Milk fs made impure by mixing water with it.

(b) Soya oil is made impure by mixing palm oil.

(c) Ghee is made adulterated by mixing animal grease.

(d) Pesticides are used to dry fish.

(e) Artificial colorants are used in juice and drinks.

(f) Forlllalin is used to keep fish fresh and durable.

(g) Mixing the high fructose corn syrup in honey.

(h) In order to increase the weight of the food stuff, man mixes sand with them.

Effect of food adulteration: Adulterated food causes various health hazards. It causes cancer and some fatal diseases. The specialists say that if I the slightest amount of formalin enters into the human body, it will cause serious. harm to the human body. By taking impure foods, people are suffering from many diseases· Actually, as a result of taking impure foods, our future generation is in the threat of death.

The remedy of adulteration: The remedies of adulteration are noted below:

(a) Different kinds of the campaign will have to be started.

(b) The government should make some stern laws against adulteration mixers

(c) In every district laboratory will have to e set up in order to test food item.

(d) Different institutions and food sellers will have to be fined and punished for mixing adulteration with foodstuff.

(e) The government should employ, honest and qualified people and BSTI as they can play an important role in preventing adulteration.

Conclusion: Food adulteration is a heinous act. This crime creates physical diseases that lead people to death. Not only the govt but also the mass can make awareness to stop this crime from the country.
