Introduction: Like other third world countries, Bangladesh is a developing country. Her economic development depends firstly on agriculture and secondly on the industry. Although Bangladesh is not developed in the industry it has enriched in garment industries in the recent past years. In the field of industrialization, the garments industry is a promising step.
The past condition of the garments industry: The past condition of garment industry was not good because of want of essential raw materials and government patronage. In the Period of Pakistan, most of the mills and factories were, established in West Pakistan. The erstwhile Pakistani government always expressed deformed mentality to East Pakistan. This is why the garments industry of East Pakistan was not developed and extended.
Present condition: After the emergence of Bangladest1 a revolutionary change, has come to our garments sector. At present, there are about 3000 garments industries in our country and 75% of them are in Dhaka. The rest are in Chittagong and Khulna. These industries have employed fifty lacs of people and 85% of them are illiterate rural women. About 76% of our export earning comes from this sector.
Exporting countries: Majority of the garments of Bangladesh are exported in the USA. Besides, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, France, Italy, Spain, Netherland, etc. also are other garments in importing countries.
The necessity of garments industry: Cloth is one of the basic demands of man. Therefore, the necessity of the garments industry is undeniable in the field of meeting up man’s basic demand. Every year the people of Bangladesh need 900 million meter cloth. About 76% of our export earning comes from garments. The importance of garments industry is boundless in increasing our national income and meeting up our own demand.
The impediments behind garment industries: The impediments beh1nd garment industries in Bangladesh are as follows:
( a) The linkage effects,
(b) Backward linkage,
(c) Forward linkage,
(d) Back of-product diversification,
(e) Failure to maintain a standard of production,
(f) Low labour productivity,
(g) Internal political instability,
(h) Lack of modern technology,
(i) Lack of competitive capacity.
Our duties to solve the problems: We can take the following initiatives to solve the problems of our garments industry. Such as
(a) We shall have to permit cargo airplane for swift · exportation.
(b) We shall have to ensure the regular supply of electricity.
(c) We shall have to remove corruption on the reserved system of garments industries.
(d) We shall have to produce essential raw materials in the country.
(e) We shall have to keep up political stability.
Conclusion: Garments industries is our glory. It is helpful in achieving our economic prosperity. Proper extension of garments industries will largely ensure economic stability and development of the country. Therefore, we should be more careful about the sector.
