Natural Calamities in Bangladesh

Introduction: Bangladesh is a drean1ful land of the poets. But she is not free from natural calamities. Sometimes nature becomes very cruel to us. We live on the mercy of nature. Bangladesh is very prone to natural calamities. They are now called a global problem. In recent years, they have visited again and again.

Common forms of natural calamities in Bangladesh: Every year so1ne common natural calamities like floods, cyclones, tidal bores, excessive .rainfall, earthquake, riverbank erosion, drought, etc. visit Bangladesh.

Floods in Bangladesh: In every century, the Bengal Delta witnessed the visit of about half a dozen Uoods, almost equal to the n1agnitude and intensity of those in 1988 and 1998. Besides, there were floods with lesser magnitude almost every year.

Droughts and riverbank erosion in Bangladesh: During the last 50 years, Bangladesh suffered about 20 serious drought conditions. Some researchers have reported that riverbank erosion is taking place m about 94 Upazilas of the country.

Causes behind natural calamities: The first and u foremost reason behind natural calamities in Bangladesh is our thoughtless activities towards nature throughout the world. We are destroying forests, Ozone Layer and so on and thus leading us towards natural calamities. On the other hand geographical position, monsoon, melting of snow in the Himalayas and glaciers, etc. are some vital reasons for natural calamities in Bangladesh.

Effects of natural calamities: Natural calamities in Bangladesh have been taking a huge toll of human lives cattle and property every year. Natural calamities destroy our hopes and aspirations. They cause innumerable deaths and untold sufferings to the people. Due to the severe blows of natural calamities in Bangladesh, the struggle of the people for making sustainable development ends in smoke.

Steps taken by the government: The Ministry of Disaster Management has been working to deal with natural calamities in Bangladesh. At the same time, the government is also trying to ensure a developed warning system and sufficient precautionary measures.

Measures to be taken: We can take some protective measures to reduce the sufferings of the victims. Both long and short term plans should be taken. Long term plans should necessarily include large scale afforestation to ensure a better environment. In addition, a warning system has to be improved. Finally, we should raise awareness among the common people to protect our lives and properties from the tremendous attack of natural calamities.

Conclusion: During natural calamities, the lovely look of the nature Queen turns furious. Natural calamities cause huge loss to our country. However, the effects of those may be mitigated with the combined efforts of both government and the mass people.
