Floods in Bangladesh: In every century, the Bengal Delta witnessed the visit of about half a dozen Uoods, almost equal to the n1agnitude and intensity of those in 1988 and 1998. Besides, there were floods with lesser magnitude almost every year.
Droughts and riverbank erosion in Bangladesh: During the last 50 years, Bangladesh suffered about 20 serious drought conditions. Some researchers have reported that riverbank erosion is taking place m about 94 Upazilas of the country.

Effects of natural calamities: Natural calamities in Bangladesh have been taking a huge toll of human lives cattle and property every year. Natural calamities destroy our hopes and aspirations. They cause innumerable deaths and untold sufferings to the people. Due to the severe blows of natural calamities in Bangladesh, the struggle of the people for making sustainable development ends in smoke.
Steps taken by the government: The Ministry of Disaster Management has been working to deal with natural calamities in Bangladesh. At the same time, the government is also trying to ensure a developed warning system and sufficient precautionary measures.
Measures to be taken: We can take some protective measures to reduce the sufferings of the victims. Both long and short term plans should be taken. Long term plans should necessarily include large scale afforestation to ensure a better environment. In addition, a warning system has to be improved. Finally, we should raise awareness among the common people to protect our lives and properties from the tremendous attack of natural calamities.
