Drug Addiction

Introduction: Drug addiction has become a devastating national problem in our country· Up to the sixties was a problem of the developed industrial countries of the West. Since the end of the sixties, it has spread to such underdeveloped countries as Bangladesh. Nowadays drug addiction has become a destructive social force that eats into the vitals of the nation.

Addiction and drugs: An irresistible attraction for some harmful things may be termed as addiction and the materials which cause intoxication in mart called drugs. These drugs include opium, morphine, pethidine, heroin, cocaine, marijuana, hemp, charas, bhang, etc. These drugs are used for their intoxication and stimulating effect. An addict cannot go without them.

Causes of drug addiction: There are many causes of drug addiction. Taking of drugs is a bad habit. This habit is formed through bad associations. Fnisfration is another cause of this addicting. There are many hopes in a mans life. When this hope is nipped in the bud, that person becomes addicted to intoxicants. Especially youth society becomes much drug-addicted. Because of the fact that they after being educated, become jobless for want of employment. As a consequence they become disappointed. They being addicted want to forget disappointment. Those, who never take this intoxicant, much time out of curiosity, take the taste of new things as on test. Afterward, they can’t come back from that path.

Drug addiction in Bangladesh: Bartned drugs can easily enter the country. So the number of drug users and traders in Bangladesh has increased sharply in recent years. According to the Department of Narcotics Control, the number of drug users was 1,00,000 in Dhaka in 1990, which increased to 8,00,000 in 1996 According to central drug addicts treatment of Dhaka, 70  percent of addicts are aged between 16 and 35 years of whom, 34 percent are unemployed and 23 percent are small traders.

The destructive effect of drug-taking: Drugs have a terrible effect on the human body. It carries the addict to an unreal world dreams. This is called hallucination. The addict to feel drowsy loses appetite and feels like vomiting. Poisonous drugs is dangerous. They damage the brain impair all internal functions of the body and ultimately lead to death.

Remedies: The problem cart be solved through f0llowing ways such as:

(a) Programs against intoxicants smuggling will have to be enforced.

(b) Employment facilities rot workless young men and women will have to be created.

(c) We shall have to construct and rectify the sense of human evaluation.

(d) Educative programs by parents will have to be taken.

(e) Personal and social skills will have to be increased.

(f) We should give up bad companies.

Conclusion: Young boys and girls are the future of the country. When they being drug-addicted, become paralyzed, this means the country is paralyzed. A healthy and robust man alone builds up the brilliant future of country. We all along with government are entrusted with this responsibility in order to save both the country and the nation from drug addiction.
