Introduction: Our constitutions have ensured that every citizen of the country has equal rights irrespective of religion, caste, gender or class. Despite constitutional guarantees of gender equality women of Bangladesh are still subject to discrimination and violence.
what does equality mean: Equality means man and woman should have the same field of activity. They should shoulder equal responsibilities in all spheres of life. They have an identical position in society.
Status of women: Equality between women and men means an equal visibility, empowerment and participation of both sexes in all spheres of public and private life. But women c0ntinue to have fewer rights, lower education, and health status, less income, less access to resource and decision making than man.
Progress of women’s position: Besides, the constitution of Bangladesh provides for the formal political equality of men and women. There is no legal barrier to women contesting or voting for any elective office; including that of the need of state. The fourteenth amendment of the constitution reserved 45 seats for women. They are now political leaders, lawyers, magistrates, judges, professors, teachers, employees in Bangladesh. They are working beside men in the offices enjoying equal rights. Now they have different. professions because they are as important as men.
The consciousness of woman: Women themselves should become more and more conscious of their position and their aspiration. Because women have the same capabilities as men to do noble things and contribute to the advancement of society. They can compete with men successfully in all spheres of human activities.
Problems of women: In spite of this, women don’t feel safe and security of their working places. They are subject to fall victims to sexual harassment by their male counterparts. Rapes, sexual harassment, eve-teasing, trafficking in women force, prostitution, bride-dying, dowry death, etc are being perpetrated with them.
Actions needed for equal right: For ensuring equal rights, following steps, should be followed-
(a) Action on violence against women.
(b) Enact and enforce laws guaranteed women’s equal right to equal pay.
(c) Support provision of childcare.
(d) Action against traffic in women and forced prostitution.
(e) Promote gender balance is all financial institutions.
(f) Adopt adequate paternal and maternal leave schemes.
(g) Contribute to childcare and family facilities for employees.
Conclusion: Without ensuring the equal rights of women our country can not develop because half of our population is women. In order to ensure the development of the country, we must ensure the equal rights of women otherwise we will lag behind. Women should be given their equal rights to march ahead side by side with man. The earlier it is done, the better for the nation.
