Introduction: At present newspaper is considered to be the moving· storehouse of knowledge. It bears great importance for the news seekers.

History: The newspaper was first published in China. The first Bengali newspaper was ‘The Samachar Darpan. The Missionaries of Sreeranipur published it in 1818 A.D. Now we cannot think of modem life without newspaper.

Kinds: There are different kinds of newspaper. They are the daily, the weekly, the fortnightly, the monthly, the quarterly, the periodical, etc. Most people read the details, for they give fresh news and views of the day. Others are known as periodicals and magazines. These mostly contain stories, poems, novels, and features.

Uses: Newspapers are very useful to all people. It gives us both pleasure and knowledge. We get world news, country news, sports news, market news, trade news, etc in a newspaper. It also helps in the growth of public opinion. Students can learn many things from reading newspapers. They can add to their knowledge of the language, improve their power of thinking and thus can attain the ability to express their views on the problems of the day.

Abuses: Newspapers have their dark sides also. Sometimes they become politically biased and publish false and sensational news. They thµs mislead people or excite public feeling and hampers the peace of society.

Conclusion: We should read newspapers both for knowledge and pleasure. A newspaper should be pµblished correctly and impartially. In spite of having some abuses, modem, the world cannot do without them. Hence we should form the habit of reading newspapers every day.
